During the Tucker County Backpacking Trip, you will spend the first two days preparing for our big adventure. You will learn how to pack a backpack, set up a tent, and how to read a trail map. On the morning of the third day we will head out on a 3-day backpacking trip- hiking on backcountry trails, passing by waterfalls, dipping our feet in cool mountain streams, and sleeping under the stars. You will be back home before you know it, excited to plan your next outdoor adventure. No experience is necessary to join this trip.
Monday, June 10thand Tuesday, June 11th, 9am-3pm -
The first two days will be spent in town getting to know each other and preparing for the upcoming trip. Participants will learn how to set up a tent, cook a meal on a camping stove, and read a map. We'll also go on a couple of short hikes to warm up our hiking legs. Location: Thomas Education Center (TEC)
Wednesday, June 12th– Friday, June 14th (two overnights) -
On Wednesday morning we will meet at 8am (Location: TEC) and then head out on our 3-day backpacking trip. At night, we'll camp under starry skies. Over the course of the trip, we’ll learn the basic skills to camp and travel comfortably in the wilderness. At the end of the trip, we will have much to celebrate: beautiful scenery, new friends, lots of laughter, and much accomplished.
Do I need to have prior experience backpacking or camping to do this trip?
No prior experience backpacking or camping is necessary to join the Tucker County Backpacking Trip. It is important that participants want to join the trip and come with an open mind!
What is the hiking like? Can you tell me about the camping?
Hiking in West Virginia is gorgeous! The trails are remote and sometimes rugged with rocks, roots, and water on the trail. We will teach you the skills you need to navigate and camp comfortably and will celebrate the sense of accomplishment we feel at the end!We will camp each night under the stars, in a tent provided by Appalachian Expeditions. Participants, separated by gender, will share a tent with their 3-4 “tent mates.” We will prepare all of our meals on a camp stove.
What equipment do I need?
We'll provide you with a packing list before the trip. You will need to bring some equipment from home. Appalachian expeditions will have backpacks, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads available for rental. All group gear (i.e. tents, stoves, etc. will be provided).
What kind of food will we eat on the backpacking trip?
It is important to eat lots of good food while backpacking so you have lots of energy. We will prepare our meals over a camp stove. Typical breakfasts include pancakes and granola; dinners are often burritos and pasta.
How many students can participate?
The group will consist of 8-12 students with 2-3 instructors.
Who will my leaders be?
Alex and Libbey are super fun outdoor educators! All of the APEX leaders are trained in wilderness medicine and have many years of experience leading trips in the outdoors.
